Biphasic log - Day 54 - 15th March
Not a good day, biphasically.
Evening 15th:
I was home on time and tried to nap from 1805 to 1835. But somehow I woke up at 1951. I remember having some interruptions, coming awake and laying down again, and god knows what I did to the alarm. I must have turned it off otherwise it'd keep repeating. Finally I woke up by the door buzzer at 1951.
Felt fine though. Fresh, good energy levels.
Morning 16th:
Got a little late for bed as I hadn't done much SL lately, and I got only about half an hour for it tonight as well. So finally tried to sleep from 0010, with alarm set for 0500.
I remebmer waking up at 0430 looking at the time and then going back to sleep for half an hour. Woke up at 0530. I had felt that it'd be easy to get up even at 0430. At 0530, I had to make an effort.
Energy levels = 95%
Mind clarity = 100%
Body = Tired
Mood = Hassled
Yes, even though I had about 7 hours of sleep in total, I feel hassled and bored not creative or constructive. This is how I used to feel usually on monophasic mornings.
I think I am falling into a biphasic trap now. Here's my analysis. When I go to sleep for monophasic, I feel good and look forward a lovely period of rest and relaxation. In biphasic this period shrinks in duration and hence is not as attractive at first. Then as you train your body to go into REM more and the quality of sleep is much better, you look forward even to a 20 minute nap. Yes, I do! And with the capability to fall into a good, deep sleep instantly, the temptation to roll over and sleep more is 10 times that of the same thing on monophasic. I don't see any other solution than to bring my considerable willpower to bear.
May the force be with me!

Letters in Urdu Shayri
The topic was just on my mind, so I decided to post some good shers on it. The range of emotions in the various sher's is amazing. And as always I am quite fascinated by how cleverly the Urdu shayars have expressed these things.I have included some shers from the same ghazal where I could, to make the rhyming more meaningful if you haven't heard that ghazal before.
Namabar, qasid and payaami are all names for the letter carrier.
We'll start with my most favourite one:
नामाबर तू ही बता, तूने तो देखे होंगे,
कैसे होते हैं वो खत जिनका जवाब आता है?
******
कब से हूँ क्या बताऊँ जहाने-खराब में
शबहा-ए हिज्र को भी रखूं घर हिसाब में

मैं जानता हूँ जो वो लिखेंगे जवाब में.

Biphasic sleep log - Day 53 - 14th March
Evening 14th:
I felt a bit tired and sleepy in the day but mostly while I was sitting on my seat and bored. When I was walking around and doing stuff I felt no sleepiness. Usually the real test it in the train. If I can't read or watch movies on the train, and just want to sit back and close my eyes then I count myself as sleep deprived. But today I was able to finish watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, followed by some Comedy Circus that I keep stored on my SD card.
I had a social engagement this evening, therefore I had left the office early and was able to take the nap from 1735 to 1805. I was thinking about something and took a little more than 10 minutes to fall asleep. And when I woke up by alarm at 1805, I decided to snooze once and grab a few minutes extra. I would have been able to, but the phone rang.
The call lasted only 2 minutes, and I did try to go back to sleep, but the news on the phone was exciting and I wasn't able to sleep again.
But I felt very good, just like my normal refreshing evening nap, so mission accomplished.
Needless to say, I was able to enjoy my social thing fully.
Morning 15th:
I was back home about 2145 last night and felt really good that even after enjoying an evening out I had 2 solid hours to do whatever I wanted. Even though the mood was to play guitar, I was physically a little tired. But for me, mood counts for more, so I did play for a little while.
Even with 2 full hours at my disposal I was not able to get to sleep on time. I was engaged in a very important conversation and had to delay the sleep time to 0015. But as I said before some things are worth missing sleep!
Woke up 0500 by alarm as planned, but felt lazy and lay in bed till 0530. I might have drifted off during that though I am not sure.
Energy levels: 90%
Mood: Constructive (Like feel like getting some work done.)

Biphasic sleep log - Day 52 - 13th March
Day 13th March:
Okay today was a big different. I got up at 0430 and didn't get chance for a nap. All day I had to be physically active and mentally creative. I managed both very well without any issues. Didn't feel any slowing down of systems around nap time nor any extraordinary fatigue. It was a tiring day because of all the mental work but I survived well and contributed. So, that answers the question, "What happens if you miss nap on biphasic?"
I got home about 2115 and was quite tired. So after dinner etc. I decided to take 6 hours of monophasic and then continue the normal biphasic schedule from tomorrow morning.
Morning 14th:
Went to bed at 2250, with alarm set for 0500. Did fall asleep in the alotted 10 minutes. Woke up about 0207. Felt good and fully awake, but didn't try to get up. Just went back to sleep and woke up by the alarm at 0500.
Energy levels = 99%
Health = Shoulders still a bit tense from yesterday.
Mood = Creative
This is why I love biphasic. It gives me a chance to get up early. If I get up at 6 I have to start getting ready immediately. If I snooze the alarm once for 8 minutes, then I have hurry up in getting ready. But if I get up an hour before, I have time to have breakfast, get ready in parts, and basically feel relaxed and happy about starting a new day rather than feel like a slave of the clock.
Hmm, that should be the title of my book on biphasic sleep - "Slave of the Clock" :)
Instead of playing SL I decided to play guitar this morning. And it's awesome how even these little sessions of pratice add up and help my progress.
Dear Supergirl
Dear Supergirl,
After much consideration, I have come to the conclusion that you are the only woman who can be the ideal girlfriend for me. Before you start shaking your head really fast and cause a tidal wave in the Atlantic, let me present to you the business case behind my conclusion.
1. All your crime-fighting activity keeps you super-fit (literally), so you will never ask me, "Do I look fat in this costume?" Thus nipping so many couple type fights in the bud.
2. Your world-saving activities will keep you pretty busy so I will have time to devote to my million and one projects and we'll never fall into the rut of ennui that most couples get stuck in.
3. Since I am a fairly good cook and you'd usually be in too much of a hurry to criticise my cooking we'll get along very well.
4. You will be too busy to have an affair and with your super-powers you can always keep an eye on me, hence we will be a perfectly faithful couple, avoiding another common pitfall of relationships.
5. As you will be flying us everywhere, we will never had the conversation, "Why don't you ask someone?", "I know where we are, honey?" Thus avoiding many bitter arguments.
6. By the same token, I will never need to criticise your driving and you will never be obliged to throw the car ashtray at me. I promise I will never say, "You fly like a girl!"
7. Since you already read my blog you have proven that you are internet-savvy and have good taste in reading material.
8. By analysing all your weak points that would prevent you from having a normal relationship and presenting them in a positive light, I have proven that I am the perfect man for you who can love you for who you are.
9. Since most criminals are becoming IT-smart these days, I can guide and help you when you need a real smart, techie person to hack those criminal codes for you.
10. Since I have a really smart sleep pattern, we can schedule our dates any time of day or night which would suit two super-busy individuals like you and me.
P.S. This is just a top-ten list. Let's have drinks this evening and I will fill you in on the rest.

Big Bang Theory - How to ask a girl out
Recently on a friend's
There are many things about it that I enjoy, but humour being very subjective and fairly resistant to analysis I think it's an exercise in futility to try and enumerate the reasons why I like this show. Hehe, this is how these guys speak.
I enjoy it because the humour is mostly cerebral and doesn't resort to cheap antics or slapstick. The 4 physicists who are the central characters are quite nice, next-doorsy types even though they are physicists and have astronomical IQ's.
But also that they cast Kaley Cuoco in one of the main roles and I love her! She's as hot as Megan Fox only thinks she is!
Since I can't post a video clip from the show I am posting some photos.
The Beauty of Shayri
चाँद सा मिसरा अकेला है मेरे कागज़ पर,
छत पे आ जाओ मेरा शेर मुकम्मल कर दो.Chaand sa misra akela hai mere kaagaz par,
chhat pe aa jao mera sher mukammal kar do.
I was listening to the recording of a nashisht (a recital of Urdu poetry) from the time when I was in India, in my friend's village. This sher was quoted in that.
Let me see if I can explain this beautiful thing in English.
A "sher" is a couplet, two lines that need to say something meaningful, and a "misra" is one line, so a complete sher needs to have two "misra"s. In Indian poetry beauty of a girl is often compared to the beauty of the Moon. So, this sher says, "This single line is lonely on my paper like Moon in the sky. If you come out on the roof my sher will be complete!" Of course, it's about a million times more beautiful in original Urdu.
Biphasic sleep log - Day 50 - 11th March
Well, 50 days. That's like a golden jubilee. And I celebrated it by oversleeping.
Evening 11th: I was home early but took the nap from 1800. And I woke up at 1823, but slept 7 minutes more until the alarm went off.
I think I woke up at 1823 because I must have fallen asleep in 3 minutes and naturally woke up in 20 minutes. And the beauty of it is that even the 7 extra minutes that I slept was good quality sleep.
I felt fine, very fresh and alert. Felt a bit..umm not really tired and sleepy but a bit like I needed to relax. I do keep quite active lifestyle what with all my little projects in addition to work, and it was only psychological stress not really anything physical. Watched some of my recorded TV programs and I was fine. Also keeping the lights on feels better which I hadn't turned on today.
Morning 12th: Went to bed at 2340 last night, with 2 alarms set 0430 and 0600. I knew why I was feeling all tired and achy lately. It's not the biphasic sleep, it's my habit of staying in front of a keyboard all my waking time. That's what makes my shoulders and back tense, I have experienced it before. So, I was planning to catch some extra sleeping time to counteract that. Also plan to watch more TV and do other things than computers.
So, I took a quick assessment at 0430 when the alarm went off and felt that I was tired and needed more rest. So, just slept on till 0600.
Felt very fresh. Even more than every day. Like 10 hours of monophasic.
Energy levels = 100%
Mood = Fresh
Mindset = Creative
It's afternoon now, and I have practiced guitar several times, and done other useful things. It seems that the extra sleep was a good idea and tonight I am going to go back to the 4.5 hours of core again.
This flexibility to sleep extra just one time in a week is great on biphasic. I am still trying to find ways to try polyphasic, but I have next 3 weeks of intense work coming on and can't afford the horrible sleep dep that comes with Uberman. Oh well. We'll see.

The Earthquake in Japan
I don't know what to say, guys. This is one of the reasons I don't follow news. I don't like bad news. But when something is this huge, I still get to know about it. I am terribly saddened by the huge disaster the Japanese people have suffered and would be looking for ways to see if I can help in anyway.
The other side of amazing
I was talking about how people are amazing in an earlier post. Well, there's the flip side to this.
Recently there was a problem with some Android apps where some developers (I shouldn't call them developers, normal developers are good people, let's call these people the nasties), they had developed apps that were malicious like the computer viruses. If you installed those apps they could gain control of your phone and even access your personal information. So, when Google found out, they used a remote kill switch to delete these malicious apps from all users' phones. Now, I think that was a good thing and no scare was caused.
But, listen to what Peter Pachal from PCMag.com had to say about it, and I am quoting from the Metro newspaper. "But going into my phone and erasing software - no matter how bad it may be - strikes me as a vaguely Orwellian thing to do."
That's like saying, "Thank you very much, Mr. Fireman, for rescuing my wife from the burning building, but I'd rather a strange man didn't touch my wife."
[If you are wondering what Orwellian means - Click here.]
Biphasic sleep log - Day 49 - 10th March
Evening 10th March:
I was home early again, but instead of trying to get a nap early I stayed up till 1750 and then set an alarm for 1820. But instead of 1820 I woke up at 1830. How? I don't know.
I did feel nice and refreshed as usual after a nap. But later about 2200 or so, I started feeling tired. Not sleepy, just tired, esp. in the knees, like I had been walking miles. And the most walk I get in the day is about 14 minutes, to and from the station. And then to get lunch. And inside the buildings, to and from the meetings, the loo, visiting colleagues....hmm, I can see how it'd add up but not enough make me that tired. I think it's more psychosomatic.
Morning 11th March:
Again I was so sleepy last night that I went to bed at 2340. But I woke up several times in the night. At least twice. Once after 2 O'clock and once after 3 O'clock. Both times I was awake enough to look at the time and understand, but none was close enough to get up.
Then finally woke up by alarm at 0430, but slid back to sleep without even thinking about it. Even though I solved the fast, 6-point captcha in one try. Woke up again at 0515 and stayed up with tremendous amount of willpower.
Felt much better after shower. Still feeling much better, about at par with usual, recent biphasic mornings.
Energy levels: About 88%
Mind clarity: 100%
Mood: Brilliant

Do you want to change the world?
A friend of mine is supporting this. And friends support friends. That's the unwritten charter of friendship. So here is the link, click it, and follow it if you are on Twitter. If you don't feel like following it, that's also fine. But the overall message is positive, so even if you look at it, that's something in the right direction.

Android Waale Baba Ki...
Year: 2069 AD
Place: Baba Sunilanand ka ashram
Baba ke bhakt (more women than men) holographic ghaas par apne-apne PIACS (Personal Information And Communication System, much advanced and portable version of laptop) liye baithe hain. Aashram ki rooftop par badi si dish lagi hai. Wifi signal is strong. Kaune-kaune mein mobile charging points bane hue hain.
Baba ke aane ka sanket hota hai. Bhakt apne PIACS par jalte diyon aur agarbattiyon ka holographic display chaloo kar dete hain.
Baba Geruye rang ke suit mein andar se nikal kar aate hain...
"Baba, Sunilanand ki.."
Crowd shouts, "JAI!"
"Bolo Android waale baba ki..."
"JAI!!"
Somebody plays "Jai ho, ho, ho!" on his device. Kuchh yuvtiyan ek do thumke lagaati hain, then stop.
Baba aasan par sthaan grihan karte hain. Baba ke handsome, tejwaan chere ko dekhkar kuchh yuvtiyaan aah bharti hain. Baba ke kaan mein advanced bluetooth v51.0 ka handsfree laga hai. It can hook up with baba's mobile phone, read his email from his PC, connect to the Ashram PA system wirelessly and is thought-activated. Saath mein machchhar bhagaane ka kaam bhi karta hai.
Baba pravchan aarambh karte hain.
Baba uvaach:
"Bhakto, we are living in difficult times. Microsoft has announced 267th security breach in their operating system last night. We must keep patience. It will pass.
Bhakto, samay bada kathin hai, achchhe log kubudhi ka shikaar hokar apna maansik santulan kho rahe hain. Jis par Apple ki mahadasha chal rahi hai usse sirf Google hi bacha sakta hai.
Apne man mein Google ka jaap karo aur achche, sundar (baba looks at the front row which is full of beautiful bhaktins), vichaar rakho.
Ab question answer."
Ek bhakt aage aata hai, "Baba, naya PIACS liya hai, Windows ka kaun sa version install karoon?"
There's a gasp from the bhakts around him.
Baba uvaach, "Windows nahin, baalak, Google Chrome OS 17.3 install karo. Tumhara kalyaan hoga."
Another bhakt asks piteously, "Baba, MacBook Pro ek week mein teesri baar crash hua hai. Kuchh upaay bataayein, baba."
Baba nods solemnly, "Tum par Apple bhaari hai, beta. Chrome PIACS 5 mein invest karo. Sab theek ho jayega."
There is a commotion in the back. Some disciples come forward dragging another bhakt by the collar. They throw him down in front of Baba's aasan. His device is clutched defensively in his hands. It's showing a Microsoft logo on the screen.
"Baba, he had Windows Vistaria installed on his device!" They shout accusingly.
Baba raises his hand and looks up to the sky, "Forgive him, O divine Cloud, he does not know what he is doing."
There's a puff of smoke, 3.9 seconds later, when the smoke clears the Microsoft logo has been replaced by Google logo on the man's device. There's a collective gasp in the crowd.
The accusing disciples shout vehemently, "Baba ki..." "JAI!"
"Android waale baba ki..."
"JAI!!"
Baba smiles softly.
Baba stands, two bhaktins stand on either side of Baba, Aarti starts, "...Red, green aur yellow ki mahima jo koi gaave..."

An excellent post by Melody on how we make a fool of ourselves by assuming, well worth reading.

Biphasic sleep log - Day 48 - March 9th
Evening 9th:
My guitar lesson was one hour earlier than usual today so I tried to squeeze in my nap by taking it half an hour earlier. Here's how I did it.
I left 15 minutes early and got home at 1721. I was changed in bed by 1724. Took me 2 minutes to get comfortable and set the alarm. And I set the alarm for...wait for it..1750! Yes, I gave myself only 4 minutes to fall asleep from fully awake!
And it worked! I was asleep most likely in 4 minutes, maximum 5. And woke up at 1750 by the alarm. I would have preferred to sleep a couple hours more but it was not very hard to get up still.
Energy levels very good.
Guitar lesson was good, no loss of focus or concentration, learning power as usual.
However, back at home, I started feeling quite sleepy about 2200 and thereafter. Could have been the warm milk in the milk chocolate with my dinner (that's my replacement for tea, btw), or could have just been a need for sleep.
Still, I didn't want to mess up my schedule so I stayed up by force. And in the final hour, watched an episode of Big Bang Theory to lie down and relax while still awake.
Morning 10th:
Finally I went to bed at 2340, 5 minutes earlier than my schedule. I think I was asleep in 5 minutes. Alarm set as usual for 0430.
Woke up at 0407. Slept again. Woke by alarm at 0430. Got up then.
Energy levels about 90%. Quite alert and awake. Only background sleep deep in the hours that followed.
I liked today as, other than breakfast etc, I practiced guitar instead of playing around on SL. If this trend continues I might even get to working out before breakfast.
I am wondering if it would have been better to get up at 0407. For one thing, I remembered the dream I had been having very vividly, but when I woke up by alarm at 0430, no such recollection. Also, that may have been the end of a REM cycle, while the 0430 waking up was definitely forced by the alarm.
It's just the psychological pressure of getting as much sleep as possible so as not to be tired in the day. Even though I know that's not correct consciously, at some subliminal level I believe it. Tomorrow being Friday I might take the chance and get up when I first wake up.

People are just amazing!
Google has developed this mobile platform that everybody is going crazy about. Yes, I am talking about Android. And Google being Google (and not Apple) they released the source code also and kept releasing with every new version.
The Android platform is pretty awesome in itself. But then some people, probably young, school-going teenagers, got their hands on this OS code and tweaked the hell out of it. They tweaked stuff, they developed stuff, they fine-tuned and optimized, or whatever you want to call it, but they released something called a custom ROM. A custom ROM is an unofficial version of the Android OS and has even MORE features than the original.
This one guy called Cyanogen (his internet handle not his name), probably a 17-year old genius who goes to school in the day and juggles bits and bytes around at night, publishes this enhanced OS, developed by himself and the other collaborating developers from original Google source. The website is called www.cyanogen.com (what did you expect it to be called?).
I am amazed by how these guys, invidual developers, manage to improve upon the output of a huge corporation like Google! And from all I know, Goole is not the kind of company that stifles creativity in the first place.
Then look at YouTube. People post all kinds of stuff there. Other than the jokes and silly videos, there is a plethora of useful information on YouTube in the form of tutorials and instructional videos. And most of it done by individuals!
Then look at all these bloggers, they create so much content every day that at a rough guess it's much more than the newspapers of the world. These days when I search for information, the type where I need a question answered, I get most helpful links from YouTube, blogs and forums like Yahoo Answers.
On polyphasic sleep my first source of information was purely blogs.
When making buying decisions, esp. about things like books and mobile devices, my most reliable source of information are personal reviews.
It just goes to show that in this information age, individual is as important, if not more, as the big corporations. And I have seen it happen in front of me during my own lifetime! It still amazes me!
Biphasic sleep log - Day 47 - 8th March
No news is good news!
Evening 8th March:
Had this feeling of background sleep dep from the morning, like I was somehow cheating sleep. Felt a bit more "foregroundy" tired late in the afternoon. Especially in one meeting when I had trouble staying awake. Not entirely a biphasic thing, also a boring meeting.
Got home in time so had my nap regulation style 1800-1830. It was in two parts even though I fell asleep very quickly, I woke up about 1815. Slept again, of course and woke up by alarm at 1830.
Energy levels very good. Feeling of alertness great.
Morning 9th:
Last night, started feeling a bit sleepy around 2200, but perservered and it passed quickly. Was fully awake when I decided to go to bed for midnight. Down at 2350, alarm set for 0430.
I think I woke up once in the night, but I don't remember it. Finally woke up at 0430 by the alarm. While physically it took a big effort in coming fully awake, it didn't take all that much willpower. I think it's psychological. 6 am used to be my hard limit, because otherwise I would not get to work on time. Then it became 5 am, because I wouldn't get to have breakfast and not able to play at all. Now, it's becoming 4.30 am because I feel rushed in playing and having breakfast both if I wake up at 5.
Energy levels: About 80%. Yawning and that feeling of background sleep dep. But I know this will go away once I have a hot drink. Hot chocolate not coffee. Actually going to try a banana and see if that helps.
I am going to continue this pattern for rest of the week. Just so I can get back to the point where I had energy levels close to 100% on biphasic with 6 hours of sleep. I need to achieve the same on 4:50 hours of sleep.
I really want to try Uberman, just for the heck of it.
I like that I have been writing on my blog regularly during this period without missing a day.
