Note 7 Catching Fire is Boon to Apple

http://mashable.com/2016/09/09/cpsc-samsung-galaxy-note-7-recall/#2ou1PnWkI8qz

I moved away from Samsung last year when they went in for a stupid double edge for the Note edge 2 but still this seems like a huge set back for the company especially in terms of reputation. And a setback for Samsung will be god's gift to Apple. I hate that.

Satisfaction Cost

“How much?”
“Combien?” (French)
“Cuánto” (Spanish)
“Quanto” (Italian)
“いくらですか” (ikura desu ka?) (Japanese)

No matter which language you use this is one expression that is universally important!

How to ask the price of something is an essential phrase whether you are out visiting the market or “agora” in Greek or shopping in the neighbourhood market for melons.

The significance of this question is twofold - to find out if you can afford it and to judge whether it’s worth that price. The order of these considerations changes based on various factors.

And then there’s the whole economics of price vs. supply vs. demand. There are already many books written on this topic so I won’t go into that. However, I do want to discuss the price vs. perception of quality phenomenon.

In Hindi we have a saying, “Mehnga roye ek baar, sasta roye baar baar” meaning the one who buys expensive cries once (for having to pay a high price) but the one who buys cheap cries again and again (when the thing breaks down or lets him down).

Generally, that’s the idea, something that’s more expensive is better in quality. This was based on certain factors that were true in the industrial age. The price of the item depended on the materials used, the workmanship, the machines and other manufacturer-oriented factors.

And then entered advertising into the field. If you could make the consumer want the item, the actual quality of the item could be made secondary. Readers of my blog, and my friends (and strangers) know that I don’t like iPhones and I have commented more than once that they would be alright if they were priced at about £100-£200. It’s advertising and clever marketing that allows Apple to sell them at the exorbitant price that they don’t deserve.

So, what is the real driver for the cost here? It’s Satisfaction. Companies are able to set the prices of their products based on how much a given product will satisfy the customer. You would be more satisfied carrying the likes of Samsung, LG or Sony mobile in your pocket than some unknown brand that originated in a nameless factory in a far east Asian country. The factory maybe situated down the road from the Samsung factory but the product would not give you the same pride, same assurance, same Satisfaction if you will...

Given that it’s not simple enough in these times to compare two products and judge their intrinsic quality from holding them in your hands like you could compare two earthen pitchers, it becomes necessary to take things at face value or Brand Value.

This phenomenon causes the disconnect between cost and price. Companies no longer set the prices  of items based on their cost price and overhead but based on Satisfaction Cost, what the consumer can be made to pay for that item.

Samsung Galaxy S6 - Samsung Taking a Piss

I hope Samsung have some shepherds on  their staff or at least they plan to hire some soon because they have got my goat and I suspect they will get a lot of people's goats with this S6 announcement.

The reason I hate, nay despise Apple, is not personal. They make high-priced, crippled, unusable shiny tech products and try to use marketing to sell them to mostly gullible, non-tech-savvy users. And that gets my goat. Samsung has done the same with S6. Non-replaceable battery, glass back, no-SD card…I wouldn’t buy this phone if they paid me to use it! No Sale!

It's nice to see when a company listens to its consumers. On the other hand, it's frustrating to see when a company completely disregards what their users like and try to copy their competitors. The plastic body Galaxy phones were light and popular. So, why go for the aluminium body because some reviewers ask you? The glass back?  WTF, Samsung?

I love the edge on a phone, I currently own the Note Edge and love it to bits. The edge screen is good-looking and very useful. It's so handy that I can't go back to non-edged phone now. But two edges? No, not good. Especially, as according to CNET reviewer the edges are not used in the same way.

People make light of the lack of expandable storage and say stupid things like use the cloud or 32GB is more than enough. No, it's not. And cloud is not the same thing as a micro-sd card in the phone. I currently have a 32GB phone with a 128GB microSD card and for the first time in my life, I am happy with my phone storage capacity.

Same goes for the replaceable battery. I could carry a charger or a powerpack or even a solar charger. None of it compares the convenience of just popping out the battery and putting in a charged one.

Honestly, I was not even thinking to buy the S6 as I am going to wait for the Note 5 Edge but this just pisses me off. If they do this kind of BS with the Note 5 series I will just stick to my Note Edge or shop around for a different phone from another company.

Samsung Galaxy S5 - Finally Launched

Since I just spent an hour watching the Samsung Unpacked event streamed live from Barcelona, I might as well tell my readers what I learnt.

Galaxy S5 - Fingerprint scanner, 5.1" super AMOLED Full HD screen, yes, I was disappointed as I was hoping for a 2K screen, but there are some innovative improvements in display technology that will make this a unique display. The design is a bit disappointing after watching all those "concept" videos. It's a simple S4-like shape and design, with a perforated back (so I am assuming a metal body not plastic). It has a heart rate sensor.

The fingerprint scanner can be used for making paypal payments. Would be good if I didn't already hate paypal.

Although it's not waterproof it is water and dust resistant, the rating is IP67. I doubt that it would let me sing along in the shower as the Samsung VP J.D. Ayme was urging everybody to do, but at least it would be safe to take the phone out in the rain. I live in London, this is a big deal for me.

The camera is a 16 MP camera with many improvements. This one did impress me. The sensor is bigger, the autofocus is faster, there is even selective focus to emulate DSLR-like shallow DOF. It looked very good on screen. There is HDR for both stills and video. 0.3 seconds response time.

They didn't talk about the processor or RAM, that seems to be tomorrow's agenda on their event. The battery is 2800mAh, that was a big disappointment. There is a Ultra Power Saving mode that turns off everything except essential functions and even turns the screen to black and white. Samsung claims that in this mode the phone can last for 24 hours on standby on 10% battery left. Well, I would have preferred a 3200mAh battery.

The release date is April 11.

Samsung Galaxy Note vs. iPhone - Street Challenge

This particular Samsung ad has pissed off a lot of Apple fanbois so I feel like I must post it. Make sure you read the comments from fanbois below the video, they are hilarious. I laughed out loud when I read how they were badmouthing the poor girl for not knowing that the iPhone could do these things, what these idiots forgot was that no iPhone ever came out a stylus so it definitely canNOT do any of those things. Enjoy. :)
